About the Carved Gourd: The gourd ( legenaria bulgaris) , known as mate or gourd in Peru, is the support for the development of the refined art of Mate. The oldest carved gourds date back 3500 years and were found at HuacaPrieta (Chicama Valley), on the northern coast of Peru. In more recent times this practice has had great development in the Ayacucho region of Huanta, from where the 'kill huantas' known for the vitality of its thick but steady lines, through which the craftsman represents scenes of peasant life. The instrument used to produce this type of craft is the "burin" and the technique is called "burilado".
